The smallest thing which does the job.
We build the low-carbon version by default. It is not a service, it is not a line on the invoice, and we do not wait to be asked.
Every figure on this page is measured from the deployed files. The arithmetic is in section 03.
We do not sell this. We build it in.
Every project we deliver leaves in its lighter form. We do not itemize it, we do not put it in the proposal, and we do not charge for it, because the moment it becomes a line on a quote it becomes the first line cut.
Some clients care about this and some do not. It makes no difference to what we build. A client who never once mentions carbon still gets the version which loads faster, holds less, and costs less to run.
This is an easy position to hold, because the environmental case and the quality case point the same way. Less weight is less latency. Fewer dependencies are fewer things which break. A smaller build is a cheaper build to maintain. We have not yet had to choose between the greener option and the better one, and if that day arrives we will say so here.
Three places where the weight is decided.
This site is the argument, so here is the receipt.
Formist.studio is 83 pages in three languages. A first visit is the document, the icon, the analytics script, and whatever loads before you scroll. On that measure the median page transfers 18.9 KB and the heaviest is the home page at 176.3 KB. Read a case study to the end, every photograph loaded, and the heaviest page on the site comes to 462.9 KB, still inside the budget. Every page carries its own weight and its own carbon figure in the footer, computed from the bytes we actually deployed. Everything we deploy adds up to 115.2 MB. Film is 108.3 MB of that and none of it moves until somebody presses play, which leaves 6.97 MB of website.
The model is Sustainable Web Design v4, which splits energy into operational and embodied across the data center, the network, and the device in your hand.
What we do not deduct. The model allows two discounts which we do not take. We apply no green hosting reduction, because our host does not appear in the Green Web Foundation directory and we will not claim a saving we cannot evidence. We apply no returning visitor cache discount, because it would flatter the figure by assuming you have been here before. What we publish is the high end of the model, not the kind one.
Check it yourself. Put this address into the Website Carbon Calculator, which runs the same version of the same model and does not work for us. Put our domain into the Green Web Check and you will see the result which stops us claiming green hosting.
One worked example. There is a film on the Intelligent Core page. It weighs 5.4 MB, more than ten times the budget of the page it sits on. It does not load. What loads is a still image of 44 kilobytes, and the button prints the weight before you decide to spend it. That is the whole method in one component: do not decide for the visitor, and do not hide the cost.
The honest limits.
The host is not provably green. This site runs on Vercel, which does not appear in the Green Web Foundation directory. That does not mean the electricity is dirty. It means we cannot prove it is clean, so we deduct nothing for it and we keep looking.
Images are still the largest cost. Every photograph and plate here is WebP, checked against the original before it shipped. The next saving is not technical. It is editorial: publishing fewer images, and choosing them better.
The brand typeface is not here yet. This site sets in a system font stack, which costs nothing to load. When our own typeface ships it will cost bytes, and we will publish what it cost.
A figure built from bytes is an estimate. It counts the energy of moving this page to you. It does not count the electricity which made the work, the machines it was made on, or the flights nobody took because the studio is remote. We publish the part we can measure, and we do not dress it up as the whole picture.
If you want this built into your project, you do not have to ask for it. It is already how we work.
Sustainability is not a sector. It is what the work has to do.
Nobody hires a studio to be sustainable. They hire one to bring an emissions number down, to get an ageing asset running cleaner, or to put a figure in front of a crew which can act on it before the end of the shift. So we do not sell sustainability as a practice with its own page in the pitch. We build it inside the sector where the ambition already sits, and the client pays for the outcome rather than the label.
Industry and energy is where most of it lands. Emissions and energy intelligence puts methane and flare monitoring, energy intensity, and Scope 1 reporting into one view: the number a regulator asks for, and the number a shift can act on. Brown to green takes the assets which are already running and makes them run cleaner, through leak detection, water reuse, predictive maintenance, and the interfaces which put all three in front of the same crew. We start at the meter instead of the roadmap: what is measured today, and what the number has to become.
The rest is quieter and it runs through everything else. Fewer screens in a journey. A tool which runs on the hardware a team already has instead of the hardware in next year’s budget. An image pipeline which ships a fraction of what it was given. None of that is sold as sustainability. It is the same discipline as this page, applied where nobody is looking: build the smallest thing which does the job.
